A Red Kite has been spotted circling over Peter Tavy – have you seen it?
Three people have reported seeing the Kite – one of them says that he also saw a Red Kite in the Merrivale Quarry area, so we guess it’s probably the same bird.
Red Kite (Milvus milvus)
Although not a common raptor throughout Devon and Cornwall, these large, carrion feeding birds seem to be on the increase, with more and more regular sightings being reported. Some sightings have been made on the high moorland expanses of Dartmoor and it’s conifer plantations, whilst others are in wooded areas and even semi urban sites.
Having been heavily persecuted to the point of extinction in many parts of the country, a very successful reintroduction programme from the late 1980’s has seen this impressive looking raptor spread from its strong holds in mid Wales and the Midlands.
